Home Comforts for Webb at Oulton
Knutsford-based Formula BMW Graduate, Oliver Webb, had another weekend of mixed fortune at Oulton Park in the Formula Renault Championship.
Webb was his usual impressive self in testing, with a top four time showing he gives nothing away to the front runners on outright pace. Unfortunately, the qualifying hoodoo that has at times affected this season, struck again. Despite carrying home advantage, Webb couldn’t get a gap in the traffic to coincide with his tyres being in the sweet spot between warm and overheated. Webb ended the session with a 16th for race one and a 12th for race two.
With his home support out in force, Webb felt he had to make amends for a disappointing qualifying. Webb has shown several times this season that he doesn’t allow adversity to get the better of him, and this attitude was firmly in evidence in race one. The A-level student was giving it his all right from the start and managed to overtake an incredible five cars in the opening lap. Webb has been doing a great deal of overtaking this year and that experience came in useful as he fought his way past another three rivals to finish the race in 8th.
Full of confidence after race one, Webb went for an ambitious overtaking move at Cascades and went from 12th to 9th in an instant. Unfortunately, his rivals weren’t quite so delighted with his ambition and he was eased onto the grass. The resulting spin relegated him to 14th and ended his chances of a top 10 finish. Again showing his tenacity, Webb fought his way back to the cusp of the top 10, with an 11th placed finish.
Afterwards, a happy Webb commented: “It has been fantastic to see so many of my friends and family cheering me on here. The more races I do this season the better my chances for next season will be. I have decided to do a couple of the European rounds at Zolder and Spa, to give me more track time and avoid the long break that is a feature of the UK calendar.”Webb will next be in action at the Zolder circuit in Belgium on the 2nd and 3rd of August.
