BRDC Superstar Webb Tops Silverstone Test
Manchester-based racing driver, Oliver Webb (19), celebrated being selected for the prestigious BRDC ‘Superstars’ programm,e with the fastest time of the second day of the Cooper Tires British Formula 3 International Series Test, at Silverstone.
Webb was at the home of the British F1 Grand Prix and the British Racing Drivers Club (BRDC) for the media day of the F3 and GT racing package. Webb went into the test fired up, having been selected as one of just 13 drivers to take place in the valuable BRDC ‘Superstars’ programme of mentoring and coaching. Webb joining the scheme is yet another boost to the ex-Formula Renault driver, who was awarded ‘Rising Star’ status by the club just last year.
The Silverstone test is the final one before Webb starts his season in earnest at his home circuit of Oulton Park in Cheshire. This final outing had particular importance, with media from across the world assembled to watch the multi-national grid of drivers put the cars through their paces on the famous circuit. Webb had been the third quickest driver in the Tuesday test where conditions varied all day, with a damp track making consistent running difficult. Wednesday started off wet, but as the track dried during the day, Webb took full advantage and set a time quicker than even drivers in their second year of Formula 3 racing.
Webb was delighted to round off a productive pre-season in style, commenting: “This is the first time I have been able to dedicate myself 100% to my racing, before or during a season. Every year previously I have been balancing school work and exams with motorsport, now I am can just focus on F3. To get the fastest time in the final test before Oulton Park is a great feeling and to do it at the home of the BRDC, who have just given me the great honour of Superstar’ status, is an extra bonus. Every day through the winter has had some element of preparation for this season, I can’t wait to get on the grid at Oulton.”Webb will be giving the media to opportunity to experience the picturesque Oulton Park circuit from the seat of a BMW M3 high-performance road car next Wednesday.
